i'm noticing a trend...
on my blog. and i apologizes to those who don't like it, but....
i caught the 'intriguing' interview this morning, while i was enjoying my morning cup of joe. what interview you may ask? well the insightfully ann curry interviewing angelina jolie in namibia africa.
the insight from this 'interview' is that jolie wants all children in the world to have at least a fifth grade education. she believes that with this then the aids rate would go down along with poverty. without an education she believes that the potentail of humans is just being wasted.
ann asked her about the educational system at 'home.' this the u.s. jolie replied that we just can't fix our own house, while our neighbors is falling apart.
is our house fixed? i think we have a long way to go to being fixed. also to touch on her other point...just because you get a fifth grade education does that mean that you won't get aids? following her 'logic'...so everyone with aids has less than a fifth grade education. scientific proof that aids only effects the stupid, or at least according to jolie.
this also brings up another point about education. is it a right? i don't believe that it is. it is a privilege. as tuition goes up more and more, it becomes a privilege of the rich. those who are able to afford it. also, culturally, is it a necessity? as our country has the ablilty to produce these jobs, and has a use for the 'education' that schools provide. does namibia have a need for educated citizens? educated in the u.s. sense. what about tribes living in the jungle? are they really worried about the pythagorean theorem, or just putting food on the table? the question becomes what is the societies needs?
